Frequently Asked Questions

The whole idea of a banger rally is that you’re supposed to drive something wholly inappropriate. If your car is in perfect condition then you won’t break down, and if you don’t break down then how will you have an adventure!? We cap the value of participating vehicles at £600. Sure, you can spend more on your vehicle if you want to, but you won’t be eligible for any of the coveted Rally Sahara prizes! All cars must have an MOT that is valid on day of departure.

We spend some time around Merzouga, an oasis town on the western edge of the Sahara desert. All planned driving routes are on public tarmac roads. If your vehicle is a 4x4 then you can go offroad if you like, just remember there's no breakdown recovery in the dunes and you’ll probably knacker your vehicle!

We’re not going to sugar-coat this: yes, taking part in Rally Sahara is a high-risk activity. Driving is potentially dangerous and you are at risk when you take part in this event. We will provide you with advice on keeping safe during the event but there’s no denying it, a banger rally is risky and by taking part you acknowledge that you are putting life and limb at risk.

You must be at least 19 years old to take part in Rally Sahara. If you are going to be driving then you must have held your driving licence for at least a year (if you’re under 21 it’s worth checking you can get car insurance for your chosen vehicle).

Whilst it is possible in theory to sell your car in Morocco, to avoid the ‘dumping’ of end-of-life vehicles from Europe, the Moroccan government levies significant duty on the transfer of older foreign vehicles to Moroccan residents. When you enter Morocco your car details will be entered into your passport. When you leave Morocco you must be with the car you entered with, or expect to pay hefty customs duties on departure. If you don’t want to drive all the way back to the UK then you can either drive back to the southern tip of spain (a long day’s drive from Marrakech) where you can have the car recycled, or even try and sell it. Another option is to have it shipped back to the UK from Casablanca.
-
There must be at least 2 insured drivers in each car to share the driving duties. You can’t have more people in the car than there are three-point seatbelts.

First place will win a cash prize. Remember, it’s not about being fast (or being furious for that matter), it’s about getting into the spirit of the Rally, having adventures, being a good sport and having fun. Points will be awarded for all manner of things but making our Rally Reps laugh is a sure way to see your team climbing the leaderboard.

If you want to take the minimum sponsorship option and have your accommodation and ferries taken care of then you’ll need to raise money for one of our partner charities. Or you can choose to pay the registration fee and fund all the rally costs yourselves, in which case any fundraising you do can be for any charity you like! If you choose the latter option then we ask that you still commit to raising at least £400 per person
